2 Timothy 4:6-8 CSB

[6] For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time for my departure is close. [7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. [8] There is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved his appearing.

“Don’t leave anything on the court or field…” this was the way I was taught to compete as an athlete. And this is the sentiment behind what Paul writes here in 2 Timothy.

A drink offering would have been poured out on or alongside a blood sacrifice. Paul is saying that his life has been poured out as an accompanying sacrifice to the death of Christ on the cross. Paul’s life has been poured out completely. He has run the right race, he has fought the right fight, and he hasn’t left anything in the tank.

God wants all of us to live our lives as an accompanying sacrifice to the one Jesus made to save us from our sins. Pour your life out today, turn the cup upside down and let the Lord decide when you’re empty.

Don’t leave anything in the cup. God will sustain you in all things, and when this life is over you too will be crowned with a righteousness that is not your own and spend eternity with God.
